Hello, this is Alexander Ulysses Thor and welcome to the Hypocrisy of Truth: An Author’s Blog. I’m The Author of The Book of Tomorrows, an epic saga that begins at the end to tell a decidedly convincing tale of a visionary New America in the year 2190.
I have always been a big fan of Shakespeare and truly believe Hamlet is the greatest piece of literature ever written. Period.
It is so much more than a ghost story, and much more than I ever knew. It actually answers the most important question ever pondered, which just so happens to be part of the one soliloquy most often cut from plays and films versions.
When off to England for killing Polonius, Hamlet sees an army going to fight an unwinnable battle and wonders, “What is a man, if his chief good and market of his time be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more.” A simple question, for sure, but the answer is one we have been searching for since we learned to talk. However, the answer does not lie in what we are, but in what we are not, which is not beasts that sleep and feed.
Our free will separates us from other species. It is that Missing Link they do not possess. It is what defines us, gives us Purpose, our reason for being. After all, the Dinosaurs had dominion over the land for a hundred sixty million years, and all they ever did was become bigger dinosaurs. Now, look at all mankind has accomplished in just a fraction of that time. We create, we build, and we destroy like no other creature that came before or after us.
We believe we possess a powerful lifeforce that lives on after we die. It’s what I call Our God Part, giving us the Free Will to choose our own fate. Born inherently knowing Right from Wrong, God lives inside each and every one of us. Our God Part grants everyone the free will to choose to be Gandhi or become Hitler—no one is born evil. However, no one’s life is pre-destined. There are no guarantees. Nothing is set in stone.
This is why great good can sometimes lead to an even greater evil, and great evil can also occasionally give birth to a greater good. Our God Part is the conscious choice we make when choosing to serve the whole or only the self, to be part of the solution or become part of the problem.
But unfortunately, many people prefer keeping faith in religious beliefs thousands of year’s old, rather than taking personal responsibility for their own lives. By clinging on to ancient myths and legends, we seem to have de-evolved into a gullible, lazy, subservient nation, subdued in blissful ignorance. We deny facts, and dispute accepted science that has not been subject to debate since the Scopes Monkey Trial.
There are even those mental midgets out there (not the physical kind) watching The Flintstones as if it were a documentary. All the time forgetting that we should never be ashamed of what we do not know, and only what we refuse to learn. Because if we don’t start living smart, we are all going to die stupid.
